Hell-Bent is Famous!
This week the seventh episode of The Beer Amigos was released which features an interview with some of the folks from HBBC as well as a review of two of our beers. The rest of the pod cast is pretty good too. We recommend downloading the rest of the series and giving them a listen, it’s entertaining and there is a lot of good info on the Long Island craft beer scene.

What else we're drinking.
Today, Christmas Day to be exact, we’re drinking something from Sierra Nevada’s line of Ovila ales. Sierra Nevada Ovila Quad to be exact. American versions of popular Belgian beers are often too sweet or over hopped and just missing that Belgian flavor, this one get’s it right. It has a silky smooth flavor, not too sweet but enough to let you know it’s a Belgian and a...

Harpoon 100 Barrel Series #37 Rich and Dan’s Rye IPA
It’s been a while but things are busy at Hell-Bent Brew Co. This week we are drinking one of Harpoon’s 100 Barrel Series. #37 Rich and Dan’s Rye IPA. This beer pours a nice golden color with minimal foam. There is a nice hoppy aroma which smells slightly bitter, not the flowery aroma we were expecting. The...

Batch from the Patch - Hell-Bent Brew Co Pumpkin...
Today is a good day. Today we opened the first annual Batch from the Patch. A Hell-Bent Pumpkin ale brewed with real pumpkins and hand bottled in small quantities. Quite frankly, we nailed this one. It has a hint of pumpkin pie at the beginning and finishes with a whipped cream flavor that makes you go back for another taste. With a barely noticeable 7.5% alcohol content, this is a fun beer. ...

Every home brewer has to learn the skills to make a better brew. We found this instructional video from the guys over at Brewniverse and film maker Jeremy White for making a yeast starter that’s a little different than your typical “how-to” video. He has other non-brewing videos on Vimeo if you like his style: http://vimeo.com/user1655912

What else we’re drinking…
Here at Hell-Bent we love the summer. Barbecues, the shore, and cabin trips give us so many reasons to share great beer with friends. With mid August rolling in our eyes and taste buds are curious of the upcoming autumn. The fall brings a beer store invasion of pumpkin beers so great, one would think a whole refrigerator is blocked off for road work. It’s hard to weed out the good and the bad....
What else we're drinking.
Today we are drinking a specialty beer from the left coast. Hair of the Dog Brewing Company from Portland Oregon brings us Fred to enjoy on this rainy afternoon. We recently came across a video review of this beer and as luck would have it the Foodery in Philly had singles for sale so we just had to try it. This is high alcohol (10%) brew made with Pilsner Malt, Rye and Belgian Candied Sugar. ...
Brew stand build has begun!
Tonight the brew stand build began. The design has been drawn up and the first few tubes cut. If only we had a decent camera to post some pics. Either way it should end up looking something like this… stay tuned for more

What's happening at Hell-Bent
Busy weekend so far. Yesterday we put the Black IPA on tap, racked the Pale Ale to secondary and today we are brewing a big IPA. There will be a total of 9 oz of hops in this one. We are also trying out the new brew kettle to see if anything needs to change before building out the 10 gallon brewery. Hopefully the Black IPA carbs up quickly, it smells delicious.
What else we're drinking…
At the risk of sounding too hipster, we’ve really been enjoying Naragansett’s Summer Ale. Perfect for these dog days of summer. 16oz of ice cold relief.
Hell-Bent Pint Glasses Now Available!
Pint Glasses are now available over on Cafe press.

What's happening at Hell-Bent.
Well the last post never showed up so we thought we’d update you on what’s going on at Hell-Bent. We’ve been brewing a bunch lately restocking the pipeline. We’ve brewed Pils, Black IPA, and Pale ale in the last few weeks some more Pils on the way this weekend. After that we’ll be brewing a new recipe, possibly with some Apple Butter involved or some Bananas,...
Explosion at Hell-Bent
Today there was an explosion… the Black IPA blew the air lock and spewed yeast everywhere in the fermentation chamber. I knew I took out the blow off tube too early. Oh well, it’s cleaned up and back to bubbling. Sorry no pictures

New Brew Kettle is finished
Hell-Bent can now brew 10-12 gallons of whatever we want at a time! Up next is a new larger mash tun to hold the bigger grain bill, something built with fly sparging in mind. Stay tuned
This just in.
The first Hell-Bent wheat beer has gone through the first round of taste tastes and the reviews are in. “It’s good” More to come.
What else we're drinking
This week we are drinking a BIG beer. This one has been aging for a few months and it’s certainly been worth it. This weeks beer is Monster Ale from Brooklyn Brewery. This style of beer is considered an English Barleywine, what that means is it takes a lot of grain to brew and that produces a lot of alcohol. This one sits at 10.1% and definitely has a kick to it. We don’t suggest...

Beer seems like a fixture of American culture. But it hasn’t always been so, as William Bostwick, co-author of Beer Craft, points out.
What else we're drinking.
Today we are drinking another semi local beer from 1 state over. Flying Fish Exit 9. This is part of a series of beers designed to take you on a scenic tour of the great state of New Jersey, incidentally this is stop # 7. Exit 9 let’s you visit Rutgers University while enjoying a rich red beer, not too heavy on the hops or malt, but smooth overall and relatively easy to drink. Good thing...
What's on tap
Today we tapped our first ever IPA and there are three words that describe it best. A MAZ ING! Our IPA is super smooth yet has that hoppy punch you look for in a good IPA. With a mix of Magnum and Cascade hops this goes from slightly bitter to a little bit sweet in one taste. Come on by for a taste test of your own.
Oh, and this was the first pint, it will only get clearer from here.
What's happening at Hell-Bent
Today has a couple of firsts in store for us. Brewing our first Wheat Beer and brewing our first beer using whole hops. This should be a relatively light beer, something to be enjoyed by the lady folk or by everyone on a hot summer night. We’ll let you know how it turns out….

What else we're drinking
It’s been a while since we’ve posted a “what else we’re drinking” update, so here you go. This week we are drinking an IPA that’s somewhat local, as in one state over, Maryland. From Flying Dog Brewery, this is Snake Dog IPA. This is a relatively hoppy beer, touted as somewhat citrusy, though we think it’s more on the bitter end of the local IPA...
Hops are planted
The first crop of Hell-Bent hops are in the ground. We’ve planted cascade for this year, a trial of sorts, and we’re already planning our late summer fresh hop brew! If this years hops grow ok we’ll be planting a full garden for next year. Pics to come as growing gets underway.

What else we're drinking
This week we’re drinking a lighter beer, Sierra Nevada Glissade Golden Bock. This is remarkably similar to our P.A. Pils (which do you think we prefer?). The Beer Babe has a great write up on this beer and we agree with everything they have to say. We consider this our go to “Porch Beer” and this is quickly becoming one of our favorite brews for springtime… that is until...
Disaster at Hell-Bent!
Today, after only 2 weeks on tap we’re sad to say the P.A. Pils keg has kicked. Don’t despair there is more on the way.
We’ve also got a secret project up our my sleeves. Stay tuned….

On Tap for Tonight.
Aprihop by Dogfish Head. This is how beer and fruit should co-exist. Not like this or this and for shit’s sake definitely not like this… Aprihop is an American IPA brewed with Pilsner and Cystal malts massively hopped and complimented by the addition of Apricots. It’s quite nice indeed. As is their Aprihop original screen print by Dave Plunkert (above).

Beer for Beasts!
BeerAdvocate and Sixpoint have joined forces to host an event that combines two things very dear to our hearts: beer and animals. Beer for Beasts will showcase 16 new and exclusive Sixpoint beers, as well as delicious food from local Brooklyn vendors, with all proceeds benefitting The Humane Society of New York City. Not bad, right? A few Hell-Benters will be hopping the F train out to Park...
What else we're drinking.
We were lucky enough to recently purchase a couple bottles of Philadelphia Brewing Company’s Harvest from the Hood, a wet hopped ale which uses hops grown in the brewery’s own garden and other urban farms, like Greensgrow Farms, in the heart of Philly. This ale is brewed on the same day that the locally grown hops are hand picked - giving this brew a juicy, bright hop flavor and...
Today at Hell-Bent
Today we are brewing our infamous P.A Pils. With baseball season fast approaching it’s time to start building up the pipeline. This pilsner has a larger malt bill to kick up the alcohol content with enough hops to balance it out. It’s more of an Imperial Pils than anything. This is not your normal session beer, be warned.
Check out a gallery of today’s activities here.
Mmmm... Dogfish Head Spring Beers →
Dogfish Head just announced their Spring beers are hitting the shelves. Here’s what to look out for: Aprihop, Red & White, Squall IPA, My Antonia, Namaste, and Black & Blue.
Enjoy. I know we will.
